» The role of contrast in diamond appearance
Published 16/01/2005 | Diamond Grading
The first scientific diamond cut quality studies used two dimensional ray trace calculations. Over the last decade 3D studies have evolved, that include viewing and lighting conditions. More recently the OctoNus & MSU group, followed by the American Gem Society Labs, have studied the psycho-physiology of you the observer. "Psycho" relates to how our mind creates perceptions, and "physiology" is about the mechanics of the eyes. This article begins with an explanation of why humans do not "see" like a camera or a light meter, and moves on to consider various aspects of contrast and leakage. It concludes with a discussion of contrast as one piece in the basic light response jig-saw puzzle of an effective cut grading system.
